Swedish geochemist Alatariel Elensar submitted the idea for a female set featuring minifigure scientists — an astronomer with a telescope, a paleontologist with a dinosaur and a chemist in a lab.LEGO has announced that a female minifigure set, featuring three scientists along with their lab gear, will be released as the next LEGO Ideas set. This “Research Institute” model is an official set of all-female scientist figures — a paleontologist, an astronomer and a chemist — made with regular LEGO minifigures.

The new set is a result of LEGO’s Ideas (formerly LEGO CUUSOO) project, which allows users to create and upload their own LEGO concepts. People then vote on the ideas, and the winner is turned into a real product. Previous winners have included a Ghostbusters 30th anniversary set, a Minecraft “Micro world,” a DeLorien from Back to the Future, and the Mars Curiosity Rover.

Swedish geochemist Alatariel Elensar submitted the idea for a female set featuring minifigure scientists — an astronomer with a telescope, a paleontologist with a dinosaur and a chemist in a lab. Elensar explained that “The motto of these scientists is clear: explore the world and beyond!” The submission received huge endorsements from around the Internet.

The Research Institute’s unveiling was announced on You Tube on June 3, 2014: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jrWK3UIvXYs , and a statement on the LEGO Ideas site reads “We’re very excited to release Ellen Kooijman’s Female Minifigure set, featuring three scientists, now entitled “Research Institute” as our next LEGO Ideas set. This awesome model is an inspiring set that offers a lot for kids as well as adults. The final design, pricing and availability are still being worked out, but it’s on track to be released August 2014, so keep an eye out!”
