This photograph shows the gemma — an asexual reproductive organ that detaches from the parent to develop into a new plant — of a liverwort (Lunularia cruciate). It was taken by Dr. Robin Young of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, using confocal microscopy and was designated an Image of Distinction in the 2011 Nikon Small World Photomicrophotography Competition.
