Microscopic Rotifers

This 20x photo shows microscopic freshwater invertebrates known as Bdelloid rotifers. It was designated an Image of Distinction in the 2012 Nikon Small World Photomicrophotography Competition. Dr. Michael Shribak and Irina Arkhipova of the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA, used a polarized light technique to capture the image.
