This 4x photo shows Varroa destructor, a parasitic mite that infests honey bees. It was designated an Image of Distinction in the 2012 Nikon Small World Photomicrophotography Competition. Alain Bocquillon of Maraussan, France, used oblique illumination (negative picture) to capture the image.
