This 40x photo shows the sawfly (Dolerus nitens) ovipositor, or egg laying organ. It was designated an Image of Distinction in the 2012 Nikon Small World Photomicrophotography Competition. Christian Gautier of  Vernafilm in Le Mans, Sarthe, France, used Rheinberg illumination to capture the image.
