Human Botfly Larva
This 10x photograph of a larva of a human botfly, Dermatobia hominis, was honored as an Image of Distinction in the 2012 Nikon Small World Photomicrophotography Competition. The bands of retrorse teeth kept it well-anchored until surgically removed from the skin of its human host. It was taken by Dr. Ward B. Strong of the BC Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, Kalamalka Forestry Centre in Vernon, British Columbia, Canada, using light microscopy with focal stacking.
