Recognizing Return on Investment
As we approach the start of this year’s International Supercomputing Conference (ISC’14), I’m excited to announce that Scientific Computing has created an ISC resource site, in cooperation with ISC Events. The ISC Conference page is a one-stop destination that offers comprehensive information on all things ISC, collected together in one place where it’s easy to locate. This valuable resource is specifically designed to help you quickly find everything you need, and to arm you with useful resources. Be sure to check it out at http://www.scientificcomputing.com/ISC .
In our June 2014 issue, expert contributors share their experience on topics ranging from collaboration in the cloud to meeting new regulatory requirements to time series analysis. The cover story “Recognizing ROI and Innovative Application of High Performance Computing ,” by Chirag Dekate, Ph.D., Research Manager, HPC at IDC, provides an update on how IDC’s Innovation Excellence Award Program continues to showcase benefits of investment in HPC.
In “Assessing Cloud ROI for HPC and Enterprise ,” Rob Farber, an independent HPC expert, talks about how the decision process cannot be couched in terms of traditional calculation based on direct costs.
R.D. McDowall, Principal, McDowall Consulting, looks at what is needed to ensure efficient routine chromatography data system operation into the future in “New CDS Functions to Meet New Regulatory Requirements? ” Also, in “Collaboration in the Cloud ,” Michael H. Elliott, CEO of Atrium Research & Consulting, provides his perspective on how research virtualization is accelerating market evolution.
John Wass, a statistician based in Chicago, IL, reviews the book “Doing Data Science: Straight Talk from the Front Line ” by Rachel Schutt and Cathy O’Neil; and Mark Anawis, a Principal Scientist and ASQ Six Sigma Black Belt at Abbott, looks at “Time Series Analysis: Identifying Underlying Patterns ” and how the goal of this type of analysis can be divided into characterization or prediction.
Finally, a special four-page insert showcases how the “International Supercomputing Conference Offers Something for Everyone ” and features highlights from this year’s program.
I hope you enjoy the issue and find it useful in your work. As always, we welcome your feedback and ideas for future features.
